marrow

marrow
A word meaning ‘fellow-worker’, ‘mate’ which survives in some north-eastern English dialects, especially in the Tyneside area. It is usually pronounced as if written ‘marrer’ or ‘marra’. The word is first recorded in English in the fifteenth century, and is thought to be of Scandinavian origin, though the original word has not been traced. In Scotland the word can also mean ‘one’s equal in a contest’ and ‘a husband or wife’. Some would say, of course, that these two definitions refer to the same person. W.Hamilton, in Braes of Yarrow (1724) has: ‘Busk ye, busk ye, my bony, bony bride, Busk ye, busk ye, my winsome marrow.’
